But as long as all your tuners are in the same "Network" in TVHeadEnd it will search through all of them until it finds a free tuner when it needs one. As I said above, if you are recording from 2.1 and now you also want to record 2.2 it will use the same tuner for both, because it can, because both channels are in the same stream. It will only try to use an in-use tuner if the new recording is from the same physical channel. Same thing on a same-channel timer overlap TVHeadEnd will continue using the same tuner whereas MythTV will try to grab a new one (unless that behavior has been changed in a more recent version). Also, if you try to record from two different subchannels of the same channel (say 2.1 and 2.2) MythTV would use two different tuners whereas TVHeadEnd is smart enough to only use one. But if you have 4 HDHR's you should be golden. TVHeadEnd will search for a free tuner and in fact seems to handle this better than MythTV did although if there is an actual conflict none of the backends seem to handle that particularly intelligently (for example if you have it set to record an extra minute or two at the end of each program in case the start is delayed by a breaking news bulletin or something, it won't switch away from that tuner before that extra minute is finished recording, even to resolve a tuner conflict). When using multiple TVHeadEnds that all have access to the same channels then you want to make sure they are all under the same "Network" in TVHeadEnd's configuration. I have three HDHomeRun Duals feeding into a TVHeadEnd backend and have had no problems. I've only ever tried MythTV and TVHeadEnd, and while I ran MythTV for about a year I pretty much grew to dislike it.

I have a couple of PC based Kodi front-ends as well as a couple of Raspberry Pi's that I'm going to install Kodi on. I have a roof mounted antenna connected to 4 dual tuner HDHomeRun 3's (though I have no problem upgrading to 4's if that's what it takes). Some background- I live in NYC and get a lot of OTA stations with excellent signal strength. If I wanted to run Kodi on an Amazon Fire TV (for when guests stay and want to watch Netflix) would it play nicely with TVheadend as well? This page mentions lack of IPTV support- does that include streaming from TVheadend? What channel guides are provided and/or supported by the Kodi + TVheadend combo? How are recordings and things scheduled? Can you just press record while watching a stream and TVheadend will record it? Is there a decent interface for scheduling recordings? can you connect to the PVR via Kodi and just select a channel to start watching? How does TVheadend handle multiple HDHomeRuns serving the same channels (4 HDHR's each providing channels 2,4,5,7,9,11,13)? i.e. Is TVheadend the system I should be using or would I be better served with one of the other backends? TVheadend seems to be the most popular PVR backend here from what I'm reading. I've used MythTV before and, frankly, hate it. I've used XBMC in the past but it's been several years and I'd love to get some more information on integrating it with a PVR backend.Īccording to this page it seems like I have 4 choices to use as a backend: TVheadend, MythTV, VDR, and DVBLink.
